What Is the House Edge?

House edge is the percentage of each bet that a casino expects to retain over time, expressed as a percentage of the amount wagered. A game with a 2% house edge means that for every RM100 wagered on that game, the casino expects to keep RM2 and return RM98 to players — on average, across millions of hands or spins.

It's a long-run statistical average, not a prediction for any single session. In one hour you might win RM500 or lose RM500 regardless of the house edge. But over thousands of sessions across all players, the house edge is what determines how profitable the game is for the casino.

House Edge vs. RTP: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Return to Player (RTP) is the complementary figure to house edge. They add to 100%:

  • RTP 97% = House edge 3%
  • RTP 98.5% = House edge 1.5%
  • RTP 99.5% = House edge 0.5%

Slot games publish RTP. Table games are usually described by house edge. They're the same concept. Higher RTP and lower house edge are both better for the player.

Why Slots Are Complicated

Slot RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins. Unlike blackjack where house edge is constant on every hand, slots produce highly variable outcomes — some spins hit massive jackpots, most return zero. A 96% RTP slot will return 96 cents per RM1 wagered on average, but that average might be produced by 95% of spins returning nothing and 5% returning large amounts.

Variance (volatility) is a separate measure that describes how spread out those outcomes are. High-volatility slots have longer losing runs and larger wins. Low-volatility slots pay more frequently but in smaller amounts. Both can have the same RTP.

For managing your bankroll: lower-volatility slots with higher RTP give you more playing time per RM deposited. High-volatility slots are for players who can tolerate long dry spells in pursuit of large hits.

How House Edge Interacts with Bonuses

Casino bonuses change the effective house edge — temporarily. A 100% match bonus essentially doubles your bankroll, halving the effective house edge for the duration of the bonus. But wagering requirements reduce this benefit: if you must wager 15× the bonus before withdrawing, you will play through a significant volume at the normal house edge before the bonus benefit is realized.

Practical rule: Bonuses with low wagering requirements (10–20×) on low-edge games (blackjack, baccarat) are genuinely valuable. High wagering bonuses (30×+) on slots-only games often consume the bonus benefit before completion.

The Lesson: Choose Your Game Deliberately

Most casino players choose games by appearance, theme, or what they've seen others play — not by house edge. This is the single most costly mistake in recreational casino gaming.

The difference between baccarat (1.06% edge) and American roulette (5.26% edge) with RM100 bets and 100 hands per hour is about RM42 per hour. Over 10 hours per month, that's RM420. Over a year, it's RM5,040. All that just from choosing a different game with no change in behavior.

You don't have to be obsessively strategic — but knowing these numbers and choosing your primary game accordingly is worth far more than any short-term system or streak you'll follow.
