How to Play Baccarat — and How to Play It Well

The Basics: Three Bets, Simple Rules

Baccarat has three possible bets: Banker, Player, and Tie. Two hands are dealt — Banker and Player — each receiving 2–3 cards based on fixed drawing rules. The hand closest to 9 wins. Face cards and tens count as zero; aces count as one.

Card totals above 9 have 10 subtracted (so a 7 + 8 = 15 = 5 in baccarat). This is automatic — you don't calculate it yourself. The drawing rules are also automatic; you don't decide whether to draw a third card.

Which Bet Should You Make?

The Banker bet is the statistically best bet in baccarat — house edge of 1.06% including the 5% commission on wins. The Player bet has a 1.24% house edge. Both are excellent choices. The Tie bet pays 8:1 or 9:1 but carries a house edge of 14.4% and should be avoided as a primary strategy.

Many experienced baccarat players bet Banker exclusively. There is no shame in doing so — it's mathematically correct.

Road Maps — What Do They Mean?

Road maps (Bead Road, Big Road, Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig) track the history of outcomes. They are pattern-recognition tools deeply embedded in baccarat culture, especially in Asia. Mathematically, past outcomes do not predict future ones in a freshly shuffled shoe — each hand is independent.

That said, road maps are an important part of the baccarat experience and help you track the current shoe's behavior. Using them to inform your bet size (betting larger when you see a "following" pattern) is a valid personal strategy, even if it doesn't change the underlying odds.

Bankroll Management

Set a session budget before you sit down and stick to it. A common approach for recreational play: flat-bet 1–2% of your session budget per hand. This gives you 50–100 hands per session, maximizing playing time. Avoid chasing losses with larger bets — the house edge is constant regardless of previous outcomes.

Baccarat FAQ

Why does Banker win more often than Player?
The Banker hand wins approximately 45.86% of all hands, Player wins 44.62%, and Tie occurs 9.52% (removing ties: Banker wins 50.68% of decisive hands). The Banker drawing rules are slightly more advantageous — the casino compensates by taking a 5% commission on Banker wins. Despite the commission, Banker remains the mathematically superior bet.
Is card counting effective in baccarat?
Card counting in baccarat exists but produces an extremely small edge — far smaller than in blackjack, and not practically meaningful for live dealer tables where shoe penetration is limited. It is not a viable strategy for most players. The far better use of your time is simply betting Banker consistently and managing your bankroll.
What is the best baccarat variant for beginners?
Classic Baccarat at the lowest minimum table. The rules are identical across all standard variants — simplicity helps you focus on learning the game pace and road maps. Speed Baccarat is efficient but may feel rushed for new players. Squeeze is a great second step once you're comfortable with the basics.
Can I play baccarat on mobile?
Yes. All live baccarat tables at U2 Official Casino are fully mobile-optimized. Portrait mode shows the road maps and betting interface clearly on standard phone screen sizes. The live stream quality adapts to your connection automatically.
